Celebrating Our Community: North Sydney Community Awards

  • November 27, 2019

I was very proud to host my fourth North Sydney Community Awards on 21 November 2019 to acknowledge and thank those people in our community who give so generously of their time to help others and make our local area a better place.

Very big congratulations to the Special Olympics Dance Group which won the overall North Sydney Community Group Award. The group does outstanding work by providing children and young adults with an intellectual disability with the opportunity to dance. This volunteer run organisation meets every Saturday morning at Lane Cove West and providers the dancers, and their families, a chance to catch up with peers, discuss issues and provide support to each other.

Other winners include Jennifer Horrigan who received the North Sydney Citizen of the Year Award, Oliver White from the North Sydney Sporting Achievement Award and Stephen Jones who received the North Sydney Older Person Award.

Awards were also given to representatives from Lane Cove Youth Orchestra, Sydney Community Services, Empower Golf, Chatswood Library, Cancer Council of NSW, Lane Cove Scout Group, the Happy Hens, Northern Suburbs Basketball Association, North Sydney Junior Baseball Club and the Rotary Club of Northbridge.

Local community groups that received awards also included Willoughby Symphony Orchestra, Hunters Hill SES, Lane Cove Theatre Company and the Pink Ladies at the Royal North Shore Hospital.

Special thanks go to Sebastian Robertson, Chair and Co-Founder of batyr and CEO and Co-Founder of BIRDI who spoke at the event as well as Miss Josie Ryan who sang the National Anthem accompanied by the Cammeray Public School Big Band.
