Defence White Paper secures future of Waterhen in Waverton
Member for North Sydney, Trent Zimmerman MP, today welcomed the federal government’s Defence White Paper and its commitment to the future of HMAS Waterhen in Waverton.
“The White Paper sets out the Turnbull government’s long-term plan to ensure Australia’s national security.
Mr Zimmerman said the White Paper’s Integrated Investment Program will deliver substantial benefits for North Sydney including;
- The refurbishment of HMAS Waterhen in the decade to 2025-26, representing an investment of around $20 million. Further planned redevelopment is planned between 2025-26 and 2035-36, with an investment of around $280 million.
- Four Huon Class Mine Hunter vessels (in service) based at HMAS Waterhen will also be extended into the 2030s.
“Defence is already a significant employer in North Sydney with more than 600 Defence personnel based here, which has significant flow-on effects for the local economy – particularly in Waverton,’’ Mr Zimmerman said.
“It is an important part of the working waterfront at Waverton and, through the efforts of its Commanding Officers, has established an excellent relationship with the local community and the Waverton precinct committee.
“I am very pleased that the government has committed to Waterhen’s long-term future at its current location to continue Navy’s presence in our community.
