Right decision on local council mergers

Federal Member for North Sydney, Trent Zimmerman MP, has welcomed the decision by the state government to abandon plans for council amalgamations on the north shore.

“As a former Councillor on North Sydney Council, I have seen the important role local Councils play in our community.

“I have consistently opposed forced Council amalgamations as the proposed enlarged Councils would erode their role in our local communities.

“Of course we should look at improving the efficiency of Councils and their planning functions but there are other ways this can be achieved without forcing a solution the majority of local residents don’t want.

“I am pleased the Premier and the local government minister have taken the decision to not proceed with the mergers planned for our area.

“The uncertainty it was causing for residents and, importantly, our hardworking Council staff was unsustainable.

“I want to acknowledge the work of our local Mayors and Councillors in putting the case against amalgamations so forcefully and the many community groups and residents who were part of the campaign.

“For residents in Hunters Hill, Lane Cove, North Sydney and Willoughby in my electorate the government’s decision will be welcome news.  We can now put this chapter behind us and look forward to the council elections in September,” Mr Zimmerman said.
